Sandra Bullock has canceled plans to attend The Blind Side’s London premiere for “personal reasons”—reasons that might have something to do with the alleged affair between husband Jesse James and pin-up girl Michelle “Bombshell” McGee. “Due to unforeseen personal reasons a trip abroad to support The Blind Side has been deemed impossible at this time,” said Warner Bros. in a statement. Comparing this public retreat to Fergie and Josh Duhamel’s speedy denials of Duhamel’s alleged affair with a stripper, it doesn’t sound like Bullock and James will be renewing their vows anytime soon.

Miss McGee, who looks just a bit like James’ tattooed ex, porn star Janine Lindemuller, apparently does a bit more than model tats. According to Fox 411, “Michelle Bombshell” can also be found on SoCalGlamourGirls.com, where she says you can “come have a hot and steamy affair with inked girls like me on live video.” Aside from selling live chats and webcam footage, the “fetish model” says she’s “looking for the right sugardady [sic],” and enjoys “affairs with doctors.” Hard to believe she’s still claiming to have met James on Facebook.

Newly single after a break-up? Let bikini-clad Kate Winslet serve as your role model. It’s time for daffodils to pop, lilac bushes to bloom, little girls to put on their finest dresses, and a bunny bearing eggs to visit. It is also a time to gather with family and friends to celebrate Easter more formally with a sit-down dinner. Formal dinners can be a little daunting if you’re the one responsible for pulling it off. There are a lot of moving parts to organize, from the menu to the table settings. That’s why you need a plan. Without one, you’re likely to be a stressed-out mess, running around like a chicken without a head the night (or even the morning) before. People want to see and spend time with the host of the party and you want to be able to relax and enjoy the gathering as well.

To help you stay sane, we’ve broken the big event down into a series of smaller tasks that you can do in increments of time between now and the big day. Yes you can put on a lovely dinner and enjoy it too.

1. Start with a menu. Map out what you will be serving before you do anything else. If you’re hosting Easter dinner for the first time and are unsure of what to cook, either ask a relative with some experience in that department or head online. There are so many great menus already mapped out for you on sites like Martha Stewart and AllRecipes.com. We went in search of menus that were both simple to prepare (think roast) and delicious and feel compelled to direct you to this site as well: http://www.thedinnerpartyplanningsite.com/EasterDinner.html#Choose. They also break down what you should do on Friday, on Saturday and on the big day so that everything gets to the table without a hitch.

2. Take a tableware inventory. This is one of those occasions where you do want to pull out your finest linens and tableware. At least one week before your dinner, go through and make a list of the items that you will need. Start with linens. Do they need to be laundered and pressed (if you don’t have the time, drop them at the dry cleaners early in the week)? Do you have enough matching settings? If you’re coming up short, don’t fret. Eclectic works as long as it looks like you planned it to be eclectic! The secret to combining different pieces is to keep one color and one type of dinnerware (such as fine china, ironstone, stoneware or earthenware) predominant. Let the odd pieces shine as accents.

3. Make a Delegation Plan. You don’t have to do everything entirely by yourself. In fact, most of your guests would love to be able to lend a hand. Think through what you’d like to delegate. If you’re not sure, these things are easy to delegate as most people are happy to do them: bring wine, make a side dish like a salad, bring an hors d’ouvre such as cheese and crackers, or bring a dessert. If you tend to be a control freak, consider that by enlisting the help of others actually gives them the opportunity to participate more fully and give back to you. If you still think you’ll have trouble proactively asking for help, consider having the list handy so that when somebody asks, “what can I do?” you will have an option or two for them to choose from.

4. Plan Activities and Meal Times for Kids. If you will be hosting children, assign one person in your home to pull out age appropriate games and toys for them to play with. If you are single, ask a guest with small children for some suggestions. If you are going to eat at an odd time, you may want to consider feeding smaller children separately, and with a more basic selection of foods. There’s nothing quite like young kids with low blood sugar. Trust us, you want to avoid that at all costs.

5. Let Others Help You Clean Up. Enlist the help of your family for clean up after the dinner. Assign a task such as clear the table, start the coffee, set up for dessert, clear dessert, put the food away, load the dishwasher, wash the pans, take out the trash to others in your family. Delegate before the dinner so everyone is clear on their role and timing and knows they cannot fuss when asked to do their part. That way you’re not up until the wee hours cleaning it all up by yourself.

That was the question I asked myself this morning when a friend emailed me asking for some tips.

Everyone speaks, and everyone becomes more effective and confident as they learn to speak better to a group. So why not be a standout now, and learn to be exceptional at speaking? Here is a gift in the form of three top tips that you can use, send to other people who speak, and start to apply right away. These are basics that will get you started today. Please don’t read this unless you are serious about using the tools.

Otherwise what you read will be of no value to you. Instead, make a commitment to do it the very next time you speak.

The 3 most important things

Standout Strategy #1: Structure your entire talk around stories. Tell a story – make a point, tell a story – make a point, tell a story – make a point … sum it up, then get off the stage. Why? Humans are hard-wired to learn through story.

Pictures and analogies are great for right-brain thinkers; numerical lists (ie: the top 5 reasons …) are great for right-brain thinkers, but story allows you to bring both types of people on board right away. You can embed statistics in a story. You can create pictures and anecdotes in a story. Numerous statistical studies have proven that people forget facts but remember and repeat stories.

You must learn to be a better storyteller no matter what your job is if you ever want to try to enroll anyone in your project / vision / mission / idea / product / cause. How? “Have you ever told a story that went all over the place? Have you ever given one? The problem is the story didn’t start off in the right place. In fact, it had no “start” at all. (Craig Valentine, Keynote Speaker and 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking – get his book – read his blog, he’s an absolute master). Every story must start off with a foundational phrase.

A foundational phrase is a phrase fewer than 10 words that sums up what your story is about. Start with this. Then, and only then, start writing your story. Then you want to edit your story, taking out everything that does not support the phrase. For example, in one of my keynotes I use the foundational phrase “your feet can’t move when your heart stands still”. In other words – you can only move so far when you are not following your passion.

The story is about one company I started that I was not passionate about, and what happened as a result. That phrase guides all the other content of the story. Say this phrase at the beginning, then again at the end.

Standout Strategy #2: Use Powerpoint as a tool, not a master. Whether you read Carmine Gallo, Matt Church, Guy Kawasaki or any guru on presentation skills they are 100% united on the way to use Powerpoint. That’s because research was done on how people process information – and it showed that the traditional bullet-point Powerpoint style simply does not work. So why do people do it? Same reason people do most things: it has become a norm. If you want to stand out from the norm and be remembered – do this instead:

- one picture, one phrase, one sentence-long explanation per slide. Use hi-res images and yes its worth paying for them (iStockphoto or flikr are among the best).


- choose an image that embodies the idea you want to express: be creative. For example I use an image of a newborn grasping the finger of its father under the point “vulnerability” in a business keynote.


- use the “B” key – this blacks out your slides so you can take centre-stage again.


- don’t use bullet points

Standout Strategy #3: Remove all ‘ums’ from your language – and replace them with pauses. During one of my seminars I take people through an exercise that immediately reduces the um/ah factor and encourages pausing. But you don’t need to wait for that – you can get started now. What I suggest is: – record yourself reading out a paragraph from any book.
 – read the same passage putting in “ums” and “ahs” at a conversational frequency.
 – read the same passage, replacing “ums and ahs” with pauses.
 Listen to the difference. The difference in your ability to process what you are hearing is like night and day.

Hearing is believing – so hearing this, you’ll immediately start using ums and ahs a lot less. This exercise doesn’t work if you imagine it. This will take you as little as 5 minutes, but the difference it makes will be yours for a lifetime. So there you have it. Above all – have fun with it and be you … but a heightened version of you.

Nobody could help but notice how one became hooked into the lives of the “aliens”, identifying more with them than our own human species.  The aliens became far more human than the majority of the humans!   I don’t “do” alien movies; but this film is not about aliens – it’s about the real values and balance of life on this planet.

There are a lot of basic themes and concepts of life which are portrayed within this film.  It is interesting to notice Jake’s reactions when he first encounters life on Pandora.  He displays the natural instinct of fear when we perceive threat.  He has to learn to face the various panther-dog and rhino-like animals in the jungle.  But as he learns the ways of the indigenous peoples, he comes to understand that it was his own fault that he ever had to confront these beasts at all.

It was pointed out to Jake that if he had moved more quietly or displayed more subtlety and understanding he would never have been confronted by these beasts; it was he who had (through lack of understanding which had led to fear) intruded upon their lives and posed a threat to them.  When you think about it, most fear which we experience in life is indeed caused through a lack of real understanding of things.

This basic tenet is displayed in many occurrences throughout the film.  Once Jake understands the ways of the huge flying birds, he learns to bond with them and gains a loyal cohort for life.  If you work with them, they work with you.  You become a dedicated team.  But the only way in which this relationship can get off the ground is by overcoming your fear and displaying equal “heart”.   

As you watch Avatar you see again and again how one has to “feel” with your heart and not just see in a way which is superficial.  It comes across in their greeting “I see you” which means so much more than those few words usually mean to we human beings.  How many times have you used the phrase “I see” when you clearly did not see?! 

There are many ironies such as these which “pop up” in Avatar.  The name Pandora of course says so much and Jake did indeed discover that having lifted the lid, he could never close the lid again. 

It is pointed out that if your cup is full, there is no room left for new learning.  Jake displays the open mind of someone whose cup is empty and open to being filled.  He has great motivation as he has been promised the operation to give him back the use of his legs so long as he carries out a specific task. 

There is also the insight that it is easier to face fear when you feel that you have nothing to lose.  The more you have, the more there is to lose, and hence the more fear there is to hold you back.  We would all benefit from emptying and refreshing our cups on a regular basis.  In Jake’s case he quickly realizes that his earlier motivation which had seemed to be so important was nothing as compared to the importance of saving Pandora and its people.

A further message in the movie is that the more possessions you have the more you want.  Hence the reason for humans being on Pandora at all – their quest for “unobtanium”.  Again, we see an example of a greatly ironic name.  The unobtanium is, needless to say, beneath the position of the home that the indigenous peoples have chosen, its epicenter being beneath the tree of spirits – the spirit of Ewya. 

The indigenous people also do not attempt to possess this “unobtanium”; they recognize that it is not a possession to be mined, sold or worn.  It is a spiritual energy which everyone can share and benefit from merely by being open to its presence.  It is there because of the people’s spiritual understanding, their respect for their ancestors and the balance of life.  When Jake goes to Ewya to ask for help, it is explained that Ewya does not take sides, but merely promotes balance.

The message of course is that if you live in accordance with the natural spiritual understanding and way of life and respect its balance, you will be richly rewarded.  But to those who do not gain that understanding and insight that reward will always be both craved and unobtainable.

A journey into spirituality does give great understanding and creates a feeling of balance and harmony. Avatar is not about aliens; it is about mutual respect, spirituality, community spirit, banding together as a team, balance and ultimately how in the long run good will conquer over evil. 

If what you desire takes from another, or does not display respect for others, it destroys life’s balance, and puts life upon this planet in jeopardy.

“What if I don’t last long enough?” or “what if I can’t get started?” are just a couple of worry-some questions which can just “pop” into one’s mind.  The female mind tends to drift towards “will I reach orgasm?” or “what if I take ages?”  These types of thoughts are not very helpful.  The thoughts themselves hover like a black fog, waiting and ready to quickly put out any flame of sexual excitement which might otherwise have begun to kindle.

Cringe-worthy images spring into one’s mind, unbidden and, in the main, totally uncalled for.  It seems that we are our own most critical critic, and it is our own internal dialogue which attempts to sabotage our efforts at dating before we even get going.  It is important to remind oneself that flirting and sexual encounters are natural.  We have an evolutionary instinct for this “stuff”. 

The whole point of having “instincts” is that they are natural tendencies; they instigate automatic action.  This means that it will happen automatically, without you even having to think – it just happens.   There is one proviso, which is that you can mess up your natural instincts by thinking and worrying too much.

When it comes to sexual confidence, you gain it by moving away from your focus upon worries and fears and getting back in touch with your natural instincts.  By focusing on your feelings, upon what you can see, hear, touch, taste and smell, you will instinctively know what to do next.  Sexual confidence comes naturally as you allow yourself to stop thinking and start feeling. 

Awareness is what is important.  If you focus upon your inner thoughts you are taking your awareness away from what is happening now, so that you do not notice properly what is going on and you are left wondering what to do next.  If instead you focus upon now, and all of those feelings and sensations, you will have no time (or desire) to think or to worry; you will be enjoying a positive and sensual sexual encounter.

You can see clearly how your thoughts have the power to impact greatly upon your libido.  A loss of libido will almost always be traced back to the way in which you think.  Yes, the result is physical, but the cause is generally squarely placed in one’s mind.  But this is wonderful news, as what naturally follows is that you can increase your libido through learning to think in a different way as well.

So, you have her number and you’re wondering what to do next.  It’s actually very simple to answer this question.  Be aware, pay attention, watch and listen…and then just go with the flow.  Your interest and libido will naturally be piqued.  Plan the kind of date that you would like to experience in your mind’s eye, as opposed to the cringe-worthy images that you may have allowed to slip into your mind before.
