Will The Recession Lead to More Entrepreneurs?
These are indeed unique times that we live in. The jobless rate is at its highest in three decades, and layoffs are prevalent. With more job seekers vying for fewer available jobs, this might be the perfect time to take the path of the entrepreneur and pursue the American dream.
To own your own business is often the mark of true success for many in this country. While that does not mean that a contemporary entrepreneur is not subject to hard work and volatility, owning your own business does provide you with more choices in life than the usual nine to five worker. The opportunity to own and operate your own business also always gives you that gamblers chance to make it big. Every big success story started small.
Have you been laid off or down-sized? Did you previous employer fall victim to the recent economic crisis and close their doors? Are you concerned about the stability of your current position? While no one would ever in good conscience recommend that you jeopardize any current job security you may be enjoying, if you find yourself among the millions who are looking for a new path then self-employment may be worth consideration.
It is entirely likely that the current state of the world will spawn a new breed of entrepreneurs who, either through a sheer lack of alternatives or the whim to take a chance and follow their dreams, will take this opportunity to make a go of it on their own. Have you had a viable idea or business concept that you never had the time or courage to pursue? Perhaps your new product or service idea may be a solution that the world will never be able to live without once you introduce it to the masses.
Other roads to becoming your own boss may be to pursue careers that require a retraining. This may include insurance, real estate, or even cosmetology, to name a few. Insurance and real estate professionals share in the luxury of being able to formulate their own daily work schedules in many cases, while enjoying the direct financial rewards for their efforts. Cosmetologists and estheticians participate in an industry where, according to the United States Department of Labor, nearly half of them are self-employed. They may work in a salon, spa, or medical office in which they rent a work space or operate on a profit sharing basis with the facility owner.
How about home based businesses? There are thousands of web sites on the internet touting work from home jobs. The home based business market has been wrought with scam artists or misleading opportunities that do not quite fulfill everyones hopes and dreams, but there are certainly legitimate scenarios out there that may allow you to contract to provide a specific service from the comfort of your living room.
Only time will tell what the total impact will be of the current financial problems the nation in enduring, but it is important to remember that chaos breeds opportunity. Now may be the time to grab a hold of a new career path that may ultimately provide you with a better lifestyle and improved earnings potential. The road to self-employment may not be for everyone, but this type of self-starter attitude is what helped to make our country great. It is that same determination and creativity that will help us to emerge from this current crisis as well.
